“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13) I don’t think the earth has ever seen a greater act of love than Jesus Christ dying on the cross so that we may spend eternity with Him in heaven. A groom wants only to spend every moment with His lover, and He will do anything to be with her. That is exactly what our God did for the only bride He has ever had eyes for: His Church. If that isn’t love I don’t know what is.
The other day at Life Teen, Laura said something that hit me like a ton of bricks: God does not need us. He doesn’t need me to believe in Him for Him to exist. He doesn’t need our attention to be powerful. After reflection on that idea, I came to the conclusion that it is true. God doesn’t NEED us. He WANTS us. He wants us to be with Him SO much that He was willing to come down onto earth and became one of us. Jesus Christ took the form of a human and “humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 5:8)
God is passionately in love with me, and with you, and the more I think about that the less I worry about earthly things and chocolates and flowers and cards on Valentine’s Day. My God came for ME, and he came for YOU so that we can live as free human beings. the only reason we know how to love is because He loved us first.* While we can never show our love the way Jesus Christ did, we can certainly show love to everyone we meet by living with patience, compassion and understanding.
St. Valentine pray for us. Help us to love God and others with all our hearts.

In Christ’s unending love,
