Expectations

Hey guys! Michael here,

I dont know how many of you know this but I love to surf. There is something so freeing for me that comes from God’s creation in the ocean. Needless to say when Chuy and Jayson said they wanted to come out to go surfing I jumped at the opportunity, hoping to show them the same joy that I receive every time that I paddle out. Since it’s summer I knew that the waves weren’t going to be the best, but I expected them to be somewhat rideable. As I walked down the path to Campus Point, however, I was met with the sight of a very high tide and some of the flattest surf I have ever seen. Immediately I apologized to the guys but said that we may as well go out there even though I expected the waves to be too small to surf and not that fun.

So we paddled out and as I expected, it was pretty hard to paddle into anything. I ended up giving Jayson my board to paddle around on while I did a bit of bodysurfing. As the afternoon turned into evening it ended up just being Jayson, Chuy and myself in the water (maybe the recent shark sitings had something to do with that!). Both Chuy and Jayson caught waves on the boards while I was content to just swim about, and all of us just hooting and hollering at each other with very little care. As we decided to head in Chuy said, “Even though the waves sucked, I’m glad we still came out. It was a lot of fun!” Even when I, with the experience that I have in the ocean, expected the day to not be very fun, the beauty of God’s creation came through and showed us that we cannot always trust our own instincts.

As I reflected upon this I started thinking about the summer. As it starts to draw to an end and we begin to think about school again, maybe the summer didn’t live up to the expectations we had for it. Maybe we didn’t go to the beach as much or we didn’t get to see that movie or hang out with friends as much. Regardless of this, however, we can know that God was working through it. Even when it seems like life isn’t turning out how we expected, if we are open to God’s grace we may end up having the time of our lives without even trying. So often we get caught up in how we think something is supposed to be that we lose sight of what God wants a specific situation, an experience, or our life in general to be. While I expected to not have as much fun because the waves were flat, I ended up having one of the most fun times of the summer, so abandon your expectations and just be open to what God has in store for you. You’re gonna end up having a blast!

And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
